THE BEAUTY OF INTERACTION (April 2009)

a groundbreaking innovation at Euroluce

The beauty of Interaction

To mark the rebranding of LIRIO into LIRIO by Philips, we showcased the amazing capabilities of design, light technology and user interface through our OLED concepts at Euroluce (Milan). These OLED concepts were probably the most groundbreaking innovations shown at Euroluce.

The concepts presented in Milan are the first truly viable interactive prototypes that make full use of the unique characteristics of the ultra-thin OLED technology and the soft light effect they create. We even go further: these premium designed lighting objects actually respond to human gestures, and can be brightened or dimmed with a wave of the hand. The result is a new type of lighting experience that reinvents the way we can illuminate our homes and design our luminaires.

OLED’s in action

Four different OLED concepts – a floor stand, wall, table and ceiling light – have been showcased at Euroluce. All incorporate softly glowing OLED light panels in a sleek, elegant armature.

To shape these OLED concepts we have combined a skilled group of designers, engineers and marketers to explore the unknown possibilities of OLED. The outcome is stunning… a true light sculpture with human kind as the epic centre of the user interface.

The concepts offer different ambient and interactive capabilities. In the vertical position, the floor and table-top models are elegantly streamlined mirrored planes. When slightly tilted, the OLED panel ‘awakens’ and illuminates, turning into a decorative object with light strength that can be adjusted with a gesture. LED modules integrated into the OLED panel provide functional down-light when the blade is in a more horizontal position. The wall-concept has the same interactive mix of functional and decorative light, as well as an ambi-light that washes the wall behind it in a soft cloud of light. The ceiling model features multiple blades that give a balance of decorative up-light and functional down-light that can be changed with a movement of the hand – it’s truly a chandelier for the 21st century.

These OLED concepts are particularly amazing and give a clear insight to how visionary concepts can evolve into the novelties of tomorrow.
